The Gospel of Bethany is charged with spiritual and erotic themes that delve deep into how God and religion are experienced by strong and enigmatic women. The novel shares the story of Jude Marsini, a Syrian history professor who escapes Damascus in 2011 after publicly criticising the regime for its ruthless crackdown against the young protesters. Almost immediately after arriving in Amman, however, Jude finds himself in a surreal setting where everything and everyone he encounters are a front for something else; from the American university he is employed at, the Mormon wife of the American ambassador, and even to the Sufi housekeeper and her daughter. In only three weeks. Jude, has to escape again, and this time, he must also try to escape his very destiny.
