Henry Kissinger & Richard Murphy

I've always thought this was a brilliant picture. Everyone in it seems to be saying something, though it's not easy to determine what exactly is being said. My mom's face is probably the most expressive. This picture was taken in Damascus, early in 1974 when Kissinger was engaged in his famous shuttle diplomacy between Damascus and Tel Aviv which culminated in the Agreement on Disengagement (signed on May 31, 1974). The US Ambassador to Syria, Richard Murphy, was a fascinating man, and though I knew him when I was only eight years old, I have wonderful memories of him, and of watching movies at his home, amongst them, most memorably, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Lost Horizon.
